A Plan to Help Minimise Your Motor Fleet Risks and Insurance Costs

  1. You need is a written health and safety driving at work policy document.  It’s the law!  We have connections who will provide this for a nominal cost.  The price is annual and includes up-dates.  Quite honestly it’s so cheap, unless your organization is large enough to have a legal department, you can’t afford to be without it.
  2. And you must also put it into practice.
  3. Adopt a “drive to stay alive” ethos with your drivers.
  4. Some firms use the “carrot and stick” approach, making their drivers responsible for the policy excess if an accident is your driver’s fault and/or giving individual drivers a bonus if he/she has no accident in (say) a year.
  5. Encourage your drivers to take care of the vehicle.  You never see a dirty Eddie Stobart truck; AND their drivers are very well trained!  - Click here for their site; or if you want pictures, click here.
  6. Liveried vehicles (corporate colours, logo/name on them) - Employees looked after them better.
  7. Assess your drivers’ ability at the wheel.  Again, don’t re-invent the wheel: call in outside help.  One of the facilities we have at our disposal: access to an on-line assessment, which will assess individual drivers.  The cost (April 2005 and subject to change) is minimal - £15.00 plus VAT per driver.  The 30-minute (average) road safety risk assessment enables company’s to identify “high risk” drivers who are more likely to be involved in a crash.  Depending on the results, further training may be indicated.  This can be anything from a further on-line course to a one day driving course.  At its worst the cost is not significant, certainly less than the amount your premiums will go up if your motor fleet claims get out of hand!
